Dear Mr. Wong Chun Wai, ( I know he is a Datuk, so what?)

I refer to your commentary in The Star (29 Feb 2008) in which you wrote:

" I hear church groups telling their congregation to vote anything opposition including PAS, which is simply naïve and emotional. Whatever the flaws of the system, it still works, despite some occasional hitches," said one Penang Barisan leader.

Why didn't you name that Penang Barisan leader? Because this quote is your personal view. Writers like you, who are de facto press secretaries of the MCA, write your views and attribute them to some sources or political analysts. Please lah, don't mock at our intelligence!

Mr Wong, a flawed system doesn't work!!! If it is flawed, it is flawed. How can it work?

I understand you are a Christian but I wonder how much you understand the Gospels or the very life of Jesus Christ and what he stood for.

Our Lord would not have been crucified had he accepted "the flaws of the system" of His times. He never asked his people to close their eyes to the "flaws of the system" and instead focus on development , personal comfort, bank accounts and roads.

He stood up against the corrupt leaders who were fleecing the people. He condemned them as dead man's tombs, hypocrites, vipers etc ( please read Matthew 23). The entire chapter is condemnation of the corrupt leaders of the Law.

How could one who professes to be a Christian choose to prop up a regime that is utterly corrupt and immoral? How could a Christian vote for candidates who are unwilling to defend the rights of his religion? How could a Christian support a regime that denies the weak non-Muslim to seek redress in any court of law?

What is your take on abuse of power, the dismantling of the Judiciary, the corrupt government leaders who inflate their bank accounts with money that belongs to the people? What is your stand on the confiscation of Christian literature and the Bible or the banning of the term "Allah" (mind you, this was approved by the Cabinet of which MCA Ministers are members)

Aren't all these precursors of more frightening things to come? Have you thought what awaits your children's future if this trend continues?

What is your stand on the creeping Islamization of the country and the utter subservience of the MCA that you represent, to its political masters, UMNO?

Why should I give my vote to a MCA or Gerakan Chinese who will not defend my religious rights? A good MCA leader who cannot defend my rights is of no use to me.

As a Christian, should we be more concerned about Truth, Freedom, Justice, good governance, honesty and righteousness than bread and butter issues or clogged drains and tarred roads?.

Shouldn't a Christian stand up for the poor, the oppressed and the marginalized. (Please read Matthew 6).

UMNO has done more damage to my religious rights than PAS. It is UMNO which is snatching away dead bodies, not PAS. It is UMNO which is separating children from parents and husbands from their wives, not PAS. It is UMNO that threatened us with the keris, not PAS.

Therefore it is not "naïve or emotional" for a Christian to give his/her vote to PAS against the apartheid inclined regime that is racist and utterly devoid of honestly and morality.

The government has to earn that Christian vote. It is not given free of charge. Sir, there is such a thing as protest vote. Thank You.

NOTE TO CHRISTIANS: If you are Christian and has never registered as a voter or has never voted in your life, shame on you. You are an irresponsible Christian and citizen. (Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's).

This charity event was organized by PenEvents with some politicians. Many food vendors as well as Demandby.com vendors supported the function by preparing an overwhelming amount of food and stuffs for sale.

However it turns out that the sales of coupons was best supported by the people from Holy Spirit Cathedral. Touche for a job well done.

Even our HS Carollers headed by MikeT took the leap of faith to make merry at the function without much or worse any practise whatsoever. As a matter of fact, the singing members was recruited as it went along. Haha.

Nonetheless it turn out well, so much so that the merriment was taken a notch higher when Anthony and Anne did the Jingle Jive.

If anything good came out of the entire function besides fund raising for Church of the DivineMercy was the fact that it showed the solidarity and support of the community from Cathedral of the Holy Spirit collaborated by certain key people with connections to even more empowered business communities from Demandby.com - Make IT happen.

We had fun from sing-along where microphones were passed around for people to participate and croon the classics and oldies song. There were some very sporting people who came out in droves to help lead the sing-along.

Many thanks to all those who lent a hand to make this event a success. From the decorations sponsored by ME group headed by Veronica Kow and also IC Church Helena Bana to the evergreen ladies doing the line dancing. 

Many thanks also to co-emcee Gilbert for assisting me to change music and to ensure smooth flow of the entire proceedings. Guest singers like Ben Wee, Suzanne, Gilbert, Andrea, Anthony Yong Wong and many more which I cannot even remember all their names.

We even had our own version of Elvis Presley, Tom Jones and even the great Louis Armstrong belting out the evergreens. Many thanks to a non-Catholic uncle who came with his keyboard to entertain us. In fact, he enjoyed himself so much that he requested the form to join our Catholic organization. A strange way to evangelize.

The prizes sponsored by well-wishers to vendors from the online hypermarket, Demandby.com was overwhelming to the extent that the estimated prizes gave out that night was to the tune of RM 6000 and I do believe almost everyone walk home a winner of some sort. Winning any prize alone was worth more than the ticket price of RM30 for the participants, thanks to all the sponsors.

We even had a presentation of the Zen Quantum Pendant which gave instant healing results that as an emcee I was approached by people who were not attending the dinner but wanted to come to purchase the special offer for that Evergreen Night. There was a great uproar amongst the older folks in HS Cathedral about a video that was supposed to highlight the International Elderly Day.

Accordingly there was an expression about "Children suck at making their parents happy".  The expression suck made headlines amongst the congregation of the church that words got round to Father FA who was away at Balik Pulau that got him excited too.

The leaders of the Evergreen society was bombarded with an overwhelming response because of that particular expression which has become such a common usage amongst the younger generation to mean that one is bad at something. However it was not to be amongst the elder generations who thoughts was on something else when they think of the word "suck".

Maybe they should change their perception of that word since suck can simply mean sucking on a lollipop with all it's innocence and nothing kinky. Should we then blame those that made the outcry for not having the innocence in their mind. Naughty, naughty thoughts.

Nonetheless in order to preserve the harmony amongst all generations, effort was done to the video and we hoped that it will be conducive to all parties. One good thing that happened out of all this fiasco was that the International Day of Elderly is now known to all.

In the meantime, the Evergreens are still insistent on making the elders happy and great efforts have been done to raise generous helpings of lucky draw prizes courtesy of vendors at the Demandby.com Online Hypermarket and that the odds of winning a prize is very high since Evergreen is limiting the number of tables to only 60. National Evangelical Christian Fellowship is gravely disappointed by and dissatisfied with the Federal Court’sdismissal of Lina Joy’s appeal.First of all, the Federal Court’s decision does not uphold the constitutional safeguard offreedom of religion. It is a person’s fundamental right to profess a religion of her own choice free from compulsion or interference by the state or its institutions. Freedom of religion under the Federal Constitution can only be restrained where a person actscontrary to any general law affecting public order, public health or morality. Therefore,it defies all logic that Lina Joy’s freedom to profess and exercise a faith of her ownchoice can be subject to administrative barrier in the NRD refusing to effect a change toher religious status except upon the order of the Syariah Court.The foundational principle of supremacy of the Constitution over all other lawsmust be upheld.

NECF Malaysia is also deeply dismayed that the majority decision of the highest courthas failed to bring about resolution to the present interfaith issues. By insisting that a person who no longer professes the religion of Islam but has embraced another religion to seek an order of the Syariah Court is equivalent to insisting that a muallaf1who hasattained the age of majority is obliged to seek the clearance of the religious leaders orauthority of his former religion. Mutual respect and tolerance surely cannot be fosteredwithout due regard to the principle of reciprocity.In affirming the decision of the Court of Appeal, the Federal Court has perpetuated a most unfair and untenable position for Lina Joy and others in a similardilemma. They now cannot enjoy the full rights as citizens as they are trapped in areligion which they no longer profess and are unable to lawfully marry, have children and live in accordance with the values, precepts and practices of the religion of theirchoice.

Finally, NECF Malaysia is extremely concerned that the Lina Joy case demonstrates the highest civil court retreating in the face of the relentless onslaught on their position asthe third institution in a democratic system of government. In the hierarchy of thejudiciary, the Federal Court is vested the judicial power of the Federation. In this case, the judiciary has unfortunately failed to play its most important roleof being both the guardians and interpreters of our Constitution. As an institutionabove the fray of politics, it is the only institution that can neutrally and without partisan considerations decide the serious issues raised in the Lina Joy case.

It is 1Muallaf: a convert from a non-Islamic religion who has chosen to profess Islam constrained only by true and loyal allegiance to the rule of law and the supremacy of theConstitution, the twin pillars of our Rukunegara.In the civil court’s abdicating its judicial power in religious matters on the basisof Article 121 (IA) of the Constitution, the Federal Court is placing undue stress andstrain on the government to legislate or amend related laws when the due exercise of its judicial power as interpreter of the Constitution would have brought about a fair andjust resolution to the issues.

While the country has undergone a significant shift towards “islamization” since the1980s, the proclamation of Malaysia as an Islamic country in 2001, though a political expediency, has had considerable psychological impact and further polarized Malaysiancitizens of different ethnic and religious backgrounds.

Religious vigilantism has been heightened among not only the religious ones, but also the bureaucrats. Administrativeactions whether in policies or laws are being implemented without scrupulous regard tothe requirements of the policies or laws but with the imposition of syariah rules andrequirements. For example, non-Muslim police women are to wear Muslimheadscarves for the annual parade.

The happenings in recent years are indeed grave concerns. Among others, there are religious authorities breaking up families in thename of religion, the custody tussles between a non-Muslim parent and a Muslim parent, and public morality based on the principles of a particular religion.

The Christian community acknowledges the special position of Islam as the State religion for ceremonial purposes, and recognizes the application of Islamic family laws to those professing the religion of Islam in areas outlined in the Federal Constitution.We uphold the sanctity of the Malaysian Constitution as the supreme law of the land,and it is our hope that the Prime Minister, who has publicly declared to be the PrimeMinister of all Malaysians, would fulfil his promises to establish a clean, just,harmonious and prosperous nation.

The decision of the Federal Court sets a landmark example of making legal judgementbased on religious sentiment and thus inadvertently disregarding the fundamentalright of an individual to profess and practice the religion of his or her choice. In thelight of this, NECF Malaysia urges all Christian leaders to encourage theircongregations to set aside time, both corporately and privately, to pray for our nation asa whole, in the next few weeks and months. Let us bring to God these matters ofextreme gravity and urgency, and humbly ask Him to intervene so that truth,righteousness and godliness will prevail in our land.The very basic structure of our nation, our institutions, our Constitution and the Rukunegara must remain the solid rock on which Malaysia will continue to prosperand stand tall among the community of nations, and on which all Malaysians strive andthrive together as a multiracial, multicultural and multi-religious society. Let us, the concerned citizens of Malaysia, exercise our rights to make a good decision at the rightplace and at the right platform.
